Your responsibilities

Safety of nuclear power plants is determined quantitatively by comprehensive Probabilistic Risk Analysis (PRA) models. At Leibstadt nuclear power plant (BWR/6), one of the worldwide most detailed PRA models has been developed over the last couple of decades. In addition to appraisal of plant's safety, quantification of key safety/risk indicators – such as Core Damage Frequency (CDF) – allows, among other applications, for risk-informed optimizations of maintenance / inspection activities.

Nowadays, PRA insights get increasingly integrated into plant's operation and decision-making processes, therefore many operators – in line with safety-oriented mindset – move towards real-time risk monitors. The goal of the internship project is two-fold: (i) to extend the existing model for compilation into online risk monitor software (i.e. RiskSpectrum RiskWatcher), (ii) to set up a configuration interface in RiskSpectrum RiskWatcher for representation of online availability status of safety systems.

  • Passion for quantitative and data-driven tasks
  • Programming skills (e.g. Ruby, Python, R)
  • Sound background on nuclear safety/technology concepts
  • Interest in combining nuclear engineering knowledge with data analytics
  • Solution-oriented mindset

In this project you will have the opportunity to work at the Leibstadt nuclear power plant. The duration of the project is restricted to a 3-months summer internship.
